Emergency First Aid At Work

(EFAW)

- 6 hours

This course is suitable for smaller workplaces that present few health & safety risks, where a nominated or appointed person is required to take charge in the event of an illness or accident.

The role of the first aider, use of equipment, recording incidents and actions, importance of hygiene & cross infection, assessment of situations to act safely & promptly, how to administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious or having a seizure, resuscitation (CPR), wounds, bleeding & shock, choking, first aid for minor injuries - Our trainers use continuous assessment to evaluate candidates.  There is no final practical assessment - certificated for 3 years.

Thereafter a 3hr Basic Skills Update refresher is due year 1 & again in year 2.

In year 3 the EFAW is to be re-taken, the same as the original course - certificated for 3 years.

First Aid At Work

The role of the first aider, use of equipment, recording incidents and actions, importance of hygiene & cross infection, assessment of situations to act safely & promptly, how to administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious or having a seizure, resuscitation (CPR), wounds, bleeding & shock, choking, first aid for major & minor injuries, soft tissue injuries, injuries to bones including suspected spinal injuries, chest injuries, burns & scalds, eye injuries including how to irrigate an eye, sudden poisoning & anaphylactic shock.  The assessment is practical with oral questioning on an unconscious casualty, a casualty requiring CPR & a casualty who is wounded and/or bleeding

Thereafter a 3hr Basic Skills Update refresher is due year 1 & again in year 2.  In year 3 a 12 hr FAW requalification is to be taken,

The HSE strongly recommends that the first aiders attend this course every 12 months to avoid skills fade.  This refresher course provides you with an opportunity to practise and update your skills at any time during your 3 year period as a qualified First aider.

Assess the situation in an emergency; administer first aid to a casualty who is unconsious and/or in seizure; administer cardiopulmonary resuscitaion (CPR), administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded or bleeding and/or in shock. The 3hr Basic Skills Update has continuous assessment to evaluate candidates.  There is no final practical assessment.

First Aid At Work Requalification

(FAW-R)

This coures updates the skills of those who need to renew their statutory First aid at work certificcate and whose existing cerificate is still valid.  First aiders whose certificates have expired beyond 28 days must attend the full three-day First aid at work course.

A first aider can attend this course up to 3 months before the expiry date on their certificate.  The new certificate will then be effective from that expiry date.  Where this has not been possible, HSE will allow an extension of the certificate for 28 days beyond the expiry date.

This course focuses on emergency scenarios that are faced by professionals , including teachers, au pairs & playgroup leaders looking after young children.  it meets the standards required by Ofsted and DCSF Approved Carers Scheme.

Managing the Emergency situation, resuscitation (CPR), managing an unconscious casualty, heart attacks, use of the automated external defibrillator (AED) in cardiac arrest.  Familiarisation, maintenance, battery life & storage. Indications & contra-indications, safety implications.  Suggested 4 hour trainng. Assessment of competency certificate.  Refresher training is due every 6-12 months.

(Candidates are NOT required to have had any previous first aid/BLS training prior to attend this course)

Resuscitation (CPR) managing an unconscious casualty.
